Fall is the best time for hoppy beers

The Hoppiest of times is here!

This time of year is the hoppiest of the year – the month to celebrate for everyone who enjoys pale ales, IPAs, double IPAs, and any beer that shares in the glory of hops.

Why is this time the best for hoppy beer?

Late September/ early October is hop harvest in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. These three Pacific Northwest states are the heaviest hop-producing states in the United States. Hop farmers in these states are forecast to produce 106 million pounds of hops in 2019 – over 75% of the American hop yield. Hops are only harvested in these states once each year, and the crop is dried, pelletized, and processed to be usable for the rest of the year.

October is when the hops are the freshest and at their peak.  Each year, a unique style of IPA becomes possible, and several brewers take advantage of hop harvest to make a fresh-hopped IPA.

A bunch of green hops on a tree

Wet-hopped IPAs are unique and made during hop harvest because timing is crucial.  In order to be considered a “wet-hopped” IPA, hops are added to boiling wort within 24 hours of being picked.  This is not an easy feat for a brewery down the road from a hop farm, let alone one across the country.  Wet-hopped beers are also challenging to put through a typical brewing system.  Since they have not been dried or pelletized, it is common for hop particulate material to separate from the plant during the brewing process, requiring extended cleaning times and special procedures while brewing.

Why go through all of the trouble, then?  Well, the resulting beer is unlike any other beer experience available – hoppy or otherwise. The amount of oil and hop essence released when brewing with fresh hops is different than the same beer brewed with traditionally packaged hops.

In other words, for many breweries, wet-hopped beers are labors of love.

Check out these labors of love, and experience for yourself the joys of a hoppy October.

Wet-hopped beers:

Swamp Head Brewery Gainesville Green LabelSwamp Head Brewery Gainesville Green (7.0% ABV) – For over five years now, Gainesville’s Swamp Head Brewery has made this fresh-hop IPA with a different strain of hops each year. No one outside of the brewery knows what version of this beer will appear each year – what strain of hops? Which state will the hops originate? Will the beer be a traditional IPA or a hazy IPA?  While the brewery seems to savor the suspense, the beer never disappoints.

Fresh-hopped beer
After wet-hopped beer, another type of beer that expresses the freshness of newly picked hops is a fresh-hopped beer (usually an IPA).  Fresh-hopped beer is a beer (almost always an IPA) that is brewed only with hops that have been picked in the October harvest.  While the hops have been kilned, dried, and pelletized, being used quickly after picking ensures that the beer gives off aromas and flavors of the hoppiest time of the year.

Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale (6.8% ABV) – Sierra Nevada’s Celebration Ale has been one of the few American IPAs released for the holidays ever since 1981.  While many brewers release stouts and spiced beers, Sierra Nevada takes the hops from the October harvest and uses them while they’re at their peak freshness.  Celebration Ale’s holiday release is the gift that hoppy beer enthusiasts want (and get) year after year.

Today, award-winning Maine-based Allagash Brewing Company announced it would once again distribute its beer across Florida beginning in mid-October. Allagash’s offerings will be anchored in its flagship beer Allagash White, with an array of formats including draft, 4 packs of 16 ounce cans, 12 packs of 12 ounce cans, and 19.2 ounce cans available throughout the state. Allagash Brewing - Coming soon!

“Since we left Florida nearly a decade ago, our fans there have been constantly asking us to come back,” said Rob Tod, founder, Allagash. “We’re happy to finally make that happen, bringing my favorite beer, Allagash White, to our friends in Florida.”

Heralded as “one of the top 25 most important Craft Beers in America,” and “one of the most consistently perfect beers ever brewed on American soil”, Allagash White is revered around the world, earning coveted awards and accolades. In 2020, Allagash White took home the gold for Belgian-style witbier in the Great American Beer Festival–the fourth time it received that honor.

Allagash first started distributing in Florida in 2002, but pulled out of the state in 2010 in order to meet demands in other markets. The brewery made a return in May 2020, with a one-time drop throughout the state.

“Florida is the state we get the most requests from fans to return to, and we were able to successfully pilot a test return to the market last year,” said Naomi Neville, sales director, Allagash Brewing Company. “We’re thrilled to be able to expand in the state and work with our distribution partners to meet the demand there for our beer.”

With its expansion to Florida, Allagash now distributes in 19 states plus D.C. To learn more and locate Allagash beer, visit allagash.com.

What is a Ranch Water cocktail?

What is Ranch Water cocktail

One of the hottest new cocktails to appear in bars and restaurants is Ranch Water – but what is this tequila drink? Where did it come from? Why is it appearing in so many bars and restaurants in this area?

What is Ranch Water?

Put simply, Ranch Water is a cocktail that is made by combining tequila, seltzer water, and lime juice.

According to the Washington Post, “A bunch of people out here refer to it as the Ranch Water because cowboys are out there working hard all day, and they want good water, but they want it a little bit spiked,” says Eloise Bryan, lead concierge at the Gage Hotel in Marathon, Tex., whose White Buffalo Bar is often named as one possible originator of the drink. But, she admits, “there’s really not hard details. It’s been such a popular drink for such a long time that everything gets a little fuzzy.”

Where did Ranch Water originate?

The legend of Ranch Water goes to west Texas where the cowboys work all day in the hot sun and want a drink to both quench their thirst and help them relax – something uncomplicated that could be made from available ingredients.

According to an article in the online magazine Punch, the drink’s origins are the stuff of legends. “There’s a rumor that it was concocted by a wild-haired rancher in Fort Davis in the 1960s,” says Phillip Moellering, Manager and Food & Beverage Director of the Gage Hotel in Marathon, Texas. “Allegedly, the spirit of the drink had him following the West Texas stars all the way from Fort Davis to Marathon by foot, where he was found asleep under a piñon tree.”

What canned versions of Ranch Waters are available?

Waterbird Ranch Water Cocktail

Waterbird Ranch Water (5.0% ABV) – Waterbird Spirits launched their products with a bang in Florida, and quickly brought their popular canned Ranch Water to the Sunshine State. Waterbird Ranch Water is a canned version of the classic cocktail made with real tequila that was distilled in Jalisco, Mexico.

Lone River Ranch Water Variety PackLone River Ranch Water Variety Pack (4.0% ABV) – New to Florida, but one of the original Ranch Waters – Lone River is now available! Whether you prefer your Ranch Water to be made in the classic fashion, or you prefer it spicy, with a hint of grapefruit or prickly pear, Lone River is a hard seltzer-based Ranch Water that is made with agave and natural lime along with another ingredient or two in this variety pack from the Lone River of West Texas.

No matter the type of Ranch Water you prefer, give one of these brands a try and taste the spirit this Texas-inspired cocktail today!
